Posted on: 03/03/2023

Ever need to use your phone only to turn it on and have it stuck in a boot loop cycle forever? Getting stuck in the boot loop is a common issue that can occur, and it is not a stranger to the iPhone. Unfortunately for you, this is an issue that needs to be addressed quickly because the phone will continue to restart over and over until the issue is resolved. Below, we will discuss some of the available solutions to this problem.

First, What Causes the Boot Loop to Happen?

You want to avoid the boot loop issue, so the only way to do that is to understand what causes it in the first place. Some of the most common reasons it happens include:

  • Unstable connection when connecting the phone to computer
  • Issues with the face ID sensor or dot projector
  • Failed software update
  • Jailbreaking the phone

Solutions to the Boot Loop on an iPhone

Below, you will find some helpful solutions that can get your phone out of the boot loop cycle. If you find that these solutions do not work, you may have a bigger issue such as a faulty or damaged logic board.

Force Restart Your iPhone

  • iPhone 6/6s or earlier versions: Press down the power and home buttons at the same time and hold them down until the screen goes black and release. Then, press the power button and hold until the Apple logo appears, and let go

  • iPhone 7/7+: Press down the volume down and power buttons at the same time until the screen goes black and release. Press and hold the power button until you see the Apple logo and release

  • iPhone 8/XS/11/XR/12: Press down and then release the volume up button and repeat with the volume down button. Hold down the power button until you see the Apple logo. Enter in your password when prompted

App Clean Up

A boot loop issue could be due to the apps on your phone not working correctly and you may need to clean up the apps to get out of the boot loop. To do this:

  1. Navigate to settings
  2. Click all apps
  3. Tap on each app
  4. Click storage
  5. Tap on clear cache

If you find that you have problematic apps, you may need to uninstall them completely from your iPhone.

Reset the Device’s Settings

Sometimes, your phone may continue to restart due to issues with some of the settings that have been selected in the phone. It is possible that you may have accidentally turned on a setting or two that is now causing issues. Resetting the device’s settings can help eliminate this problem. To do this:

  • Navigate to settings
  • Tap general
  • Click on reset
  • Tap on reset all settings

Recovery Mode

One way that you can often fix issues with your device is to enter into recovery mode through iTunes. You should keep in mind that data on the device is likely to be lost during this process, so you want to have it backed up BEFORE you do this. To enter recovery mode:

  1. Turn your iPhone off
  2. Open up iTunes on your laptop and connect your USB to the computer

    1. iPhone 6/6s and earlier versions: Connect the cable to your iPhone and hold down the side button simultaneously
    2. iPhone 7/7+: Connect the cable to your iPhone and hold down the volume button simultaneously
    3. iPhone 8 and newer versions: Connect the cable to your iPhone and home down the home button simultaneously
