Damaged Motherboard – Repair or Replace?

Posted on: 12/09/2022

When you notice a problem with your iPhone, you likely panic and worry that the phone is going to completely give up on you or you will lose all your data. Fortunately, serious issues with the phone are not as common and it is likely that you phone has a minor issue. With that said, there are times that serious issues do arise with the phone such as the motherboard (logic board) failing or becoming damaged.

If this happens, you will be faced with the option to repair or replace the logic board. If you repair it, will the changes restore your phone’s functionality and if you replace it, will you lose all your data?

When you take your iPhone to an Apple service center, they will likely suggest you have the logic board replaced. It is uncommon for them to offer repair services on the logic board because it takes an experienced technician to do it.

Below, we will dig a little more into whether you should have your faulty motherboard repaired or replaced.

Common iPhone Logic Board Issues

When the logic board in your iPhone experiences damage, you may not notice any issues at first. In fact, there are many phones circulating now that have faulty motherboards, but the owners are unaware because the functionality has not yet been affected or the issues are so minor that they do not notice them.

Over time, the issues in functionality will become worse and you will notice that your phone becomes increasingly harder to use.

Some of the issues you may encounter include:

  • Password loop
  • Stuck on Apple logo
  • Boot loop
  • Unable to turn the phone on
  • Black screen
  • Touch failure
  • Constant restarting
  • Face ID sensor not working
  • Locked out of your phone
  • Dot projector not recognizing your face
  • Unable to restore iTunes

Should I Just Perform the Repairs to My Motherboard?

If you know that you have a bad logic board, you may wonder if you can simply fix the issue yourself. This could potentially save you some time and money, right? While you may have some of the skills needed to fix your own logic board, it is not recommended. Many of the newer models of iPhone, especially version X has a dual layer logic board that is combined. This means that the logic board must be heat tempered to be able to open it up. This requires specialized tools and training to ensure the logic board does not get too hot.

Before you touch your logic board, you must understand the risk of doing so. If you damage the logic board, you will need to have it replaced and you will potentially lose ALL data on your phone. It is usually best to allow an expert to repair the device for you.

Should I Buy a Replacement Motherboard?

Replacing the logic board in your phone is what may need to be done. If it is, you will find that you can purchase a new logic board from several different sources. While repairs are often cheaper to have done, replacement may be a necessity, especially if your phone is badly damaged. Also, remember that with a replacement, you will lose the data on your phone.

Repair vs. Replace

This will depend on the actual problem that is going on and your iPhone expert can help guide you. In some cases, you can have repairs performed on the logic board and your phone work flawlessly after. However, some issues such as water damage require a replacement due to the extent of the damage that took place.
