iPhone Overheating – Why?

Posted on: 01/26/2023

Any electronic device you use generates some type of heat. Think about that time you picked up your laptop charger and it was hot, or you grabbed your phone and the back faceplate was warm – all electronics generate heat. However, the amount and temperature of the heat become concerning when it is deemed abnormal. If you pick up your iPhone and say woah or ouch because it is so hot, there is a problem.

So, what can you do about it and why is your iPhone overheating?

Take These Steps First

If your phone feels like it is overheating, you want to take some steps to identify why and prevent it from happening further. Overheating can lead to serious damage to the logic board.

Move your iPhone to a cooler area – The temperature where you are may be too high and this can cause the phone to warm up. Turn off your phone and then wait for it to cool down. NEVER place your phone in the freezer or the refrigerator, as this will only cause more damage.

Turn off apps that use high power – Applications that use a lot of power or have high consumption should be closed. These apps can cause the phone to warm up

Remove it from the charger – If the phone is hot while charging, take it off the charger and allow it to cool off

Update the phone – Take a moment to update your iPhone’s software. Sometimes, an update is all that is needed to better optimize the phone or an app to reduce or eliminate overheating

What Causes My iPhone to Overheat?

These are some of the reasons WHY your iPhone is overheating and what you can do to stop it from happening.

Bad Battery

Batteries are one of the main sources of heat in phones. If your battery is damaged, failing, or has reached the end of its time, then it will work harder and produce more heat.

Check your battery’s health by:

  1. Navigate to settings
  2. Click on battery
  3. Tap battery health

A battery at less than 80 percent health should be looked at. You also want to look for signs of damage or swelling with your battery. Notice a problem? Get it replaced.

Logic Board Problem

Information about the temperature of your phone travels to the logic board. The logic board is the brain and heart of your iPhone, and it is home to many different functions and sensors. A faulty board, poor connection, liquid damage, or bad chip could result in temperature issues with your phone.

How to fix it? Have your logic board repaired, or replaced when needed.

Short Circuit

If one of the electrical wires in your phone has developed a short in it, this can cause issues and lead to a phone that cannot regulate its temperature properly. You can usually tell there may be a short if your phone does not turn on and becomes very hot to the touch.

You can find the short by following these steps:

  1. Boot up the phone on a minimal hardware config
  2. Open your device and remove anything that does not require the phone to run
  3. Connect your USB cable or charger to the phone to boot it up
  4. If your phone boots, start to connect the parts one by one. Power down the phone and then disconnect the battery. Finish connecting the remaining parts
  5. If the issue appears when you connect a specific part, that is where the short it
  6. If the issue does not disappear or appear with any of the specific parts, then the issue is likely your logic board
