MacBook Pro Does Not Turn On

MacBooks are a fan favorite and were chosen because they are both dependable and reliable. However, it is possible for your MacBook Pro to experience issues along the way, and one of the more commonly experienced issues is the MacBook not turning on.

If you have attempted to turn on your MacBook Pro but have found that it won’t turn on, try not to panic. We know, easier said than done, but in most cases, it is a simple fix and one that you can do right from the comfort of your living room.

Below, we will walk you through some of the steps you can take should you find that your MacBook Pro is not turning on.

Check for Power

Okay, this seems like an obvious one, but it is possible that you may not know that your MacBook Pro does not have power or a dead battery.

Before you attempt any other troubleshooting steps, verify that your MacBook Pro has power and is charged. If you find that it was out of power, then allow it to charge before you attempt to turn it on.

Perform a Power Cycle

If you are confident that your MacBook Pro is simply not turning on, you will need to go through a power cycle on your device. A power cycle is also referred to as a forced restart.

To do this, you will want to:

  • Hold the power button down to force your MacBook Pro to turn off
  • Unplug all power cables to your device
  • Hold the power button down for 10 seconds and release
  • Allow the MacBook Pro to restart

Try Recovery Mode

Recovery mode is a good option if you have found that a power cycle is not working. By entering into recovery mode, you can troubleshoot your device to help it boot up properly.

To enter into recovery mode, you will need to:

  • Turn your MacBook Pro completely off (even if you need to hold down the power button)
  • Hold down both Command and R and turn your device on (at the same time)
  • When a window pops up on your screen, click on Disk, then Utility, then Continue
  • Choose your hard drive and click on First Aid
  • Allow the process to run and then turn your MacBook Pro off and on again

Check Your Display

Sometimes, your device’s display is the issue. The best way to tell if the display is the issue is to listen for sound. If you can hear processes going on in the background, then it is likely your display simply will not turn on.

Try Safe Mode

If the above options do not work, you can attempt to restart your MacBook Pro in safe mode. This will allow you to get into your device without some of the standard processes occurring, which can cause your device to not boot up.

To enter into Safe Mode, you will need to do the following:

  • Press and hold down the power button
  • When the startup options appear on the screen, click Startup Disk
  • Press the Shift button and hold it down
  • When prompted, click Continue in Safe Mode
  • Release the Shift button
