My iPhone Won’t Turn On At All – Do This

Posted on: 04/08/2023

Okay, so you pressed the power button on your iPhone, and nothing is happening. What do you do?

Panic is not the right answer. First, take a breath and know that this does happen now and again and there may be nothing wrong with the phone. And, if there is an issue with the phone, it is unlikely to be severe. However, if it is, taking your iPhone to a trained and experienced iPhone technician will make a difference.

Below, we will provide you with some diagnostic tips and solutions that can help you when you find that your iPhone won’t turn on at all.

Firmware Crashed

If your iPhone will not turn on and there is no apparent reason for it such as you dropped it, liquid spilled on it, and so on, then the issue could be a firmware problem. To fix this problem, you will need to force restart your phone. Restarting the phone should kick it out of the firmware boot and allow it to turn on.

To force restart your phone, follow these instructions:

iPhone 8 and newer versions:

  1. Press and release the volume up button, then the volume down button
  2. Press and hold down the power button
  3. When the Apple logo appears, release the power button (could take around 10 seconds to happen)

iPhone 7:

  1. Press the volume down and power button at the same time
  2. Hold both buttons until the Apple logo appears, release (could take around 10 seconds to happen)

iPhone 6 and older versions:

  1. Press the power button and home button at the same time
  2. Hold both buttons until the Apple logo shows up and then release (could take around 10 seconds to happen)

If this does not work immediately, try to charge your phone for 15 minutes first and then repeat.

Damaged Charging Port

The charging port on your phone is susceptible to damage as it is one of the most used areas of your phone. From plugging it in to unplugging it, the port may be knocked loose over time. In addition, dirt and debris can make their way into the port too. If the contacts within the port bend or break, you will find that your phone will not charge at all.

The best way to troubleshoot the charging port is to test a new cable and see if the phone will charge. If it still does not, use the same cable to try to charge something else and see if it charges. If it does, then the charging port is the issue. You can also look inside the charging port to see if you notice any debris inside or if there is any damage.

Bad Battery

If the problem is not firmware or the charging port, it may be the battery itself. A bad battery can prevent you from turning on your phone due to the phone not being able to hold a charge. Determining you have a bad battery may be obvious, especially if there is swelling present. However, if there is not, you may not know there is an issue.

To check your battery’s health, do the following:

  1. Open up the settings
  2. Tap on battery
  3. Click battery health
  4. Tap to check the maximum capacity percentage

If your phone’s maximum capacity percentage for the battery is below 80 percent, your battery needs to be replaced quickly as the battery has degraded. If the percentage is below 50, you will need to replace the battery as its output has been compromised.

Damaged Logic Board

If the above solutions do not fix the problem, you may have a damaged logic board. The logic board is responsible for controlling the functions of your phone, so when it goes bad, one of the common symptoms is that the phone will not turn on. Additionally, you may find that your phone becomes stuck in a boot loop, stays on the Apple logo, or that the face ID function and dot projector do not work.
