My iPhone Won’t Turn On

Posted on: 06/28/2024

Okay, so you just attempted to turn on your iPhone and your worst nightmare is happening – it won’t turn on! If your iPhone screen is completely black, you may have several thoughts racing through your head such as how much will a new iPhone cost, whether have you lost all of your saved data, and what you should do next.

While this type of situation can be scary, there is good news. Most issues where the iPhone won’t turn on can be troubleshooted and fixed right from the comfort of your home. In other instances, professional iPhone repair services can do the trick!

Below, we will discuss some of the troubleshooting steps you can take right now to try and get your iPhone back up and running.

Restart Your iPhone

Yes, it sounds pretty simple, and it is. In fact, in many cases, it will fix the problem and the best part is that it won’t cost you anything and only takes a minute or two.

If your iPhone screen won’t turn on at all, you will need to perform what is known as a force restart. To do this, you will need to force the phone to shut down and come back on as opposed to simply being able to tap the option on the screen.

For all iPhone 8 and newer models, press and then release the volume up key followed by the volume down key. Then, press and hold the power button until you see the Apple logo appear and release.

Check to See if the Phone is Overheating

An overheated iPhone will not turn on to protect the internal components within the device. If you have left your phone in the sun or your car, this is likely why the screen will not turn on. Think of your phone shutting down and not turning it back on as a failsafe.

If you have left your phone in a hot condition, wait until the phone cools off and then attempt to turn it back on. If this was the problem, the phone would turn back on in time.

Charge Your iPhone

When you attempt to turn on your iPhone, what happens? If the answer is nothing at all, then you may just need to charge your phone. It sounds silly, but it is possible the phone was not connected to the charger or that it simply did not take the charge.

Plug your iPhone into a power source and allow it to charge, undisturbed, for 30 minutes, and then attempt to power it on.

Update Your iOS

An outdated iOS can cause serious problems with your iPhone and can even cause the phone to not power on when you want it to. iOS updates are critical and should always be installed when you are prompted to do so.

To check for an iOS update, you will want to connect your phone to your computer. From there, open up the finder on your computer and then choose your iPhone device. Place your phone into recovery mode by performing a forced restart. Instead of releasing the buttons, you will continue to hold them as the phone force restarts to enter recovery mode. An option to update or restore will pop up on the computer and when it does, select update. If your device does not have the update option, you can choose to restart. Allow the device to run through the selected action before you attempt to use the phone.
